Portraits

"Queen Elizabeth II"
2023, 16" x 20", Acrylic on canvas

No crown, no jewels, no regalia, just a family matriarch who encouraged and inspired the world with grace, humor, and dignity over her 70 year reign.

Numbered Print Edition of 100: $200.
Unlimited Edition, from $25. [LINK]

"Madame Justice"
2021, 12" x 24", Acrylic on canvas

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (1933-2020) was an inspiration to a generation of attorneys. She had an eagle-like gaze that could shift from warm bubbeleh to fierce avenger in a flash. Sometimes she had an incipient yet ambiguous smile like Mona Lisa, which I've tried to capture here. This piece was inspired by a the suggestion of an attorney friend, and will make a memorable gift for the law office of any attorney.

Numbered Print Edition of 100: $200.
Unlimited Edition, from $25. [LINK]

"Feed My Sheep"
18" x 24", Acrylic on canvas

Pastor George Culley founded "Least Of The Brethren Ministry: Jesus' Hands Feed the Hungry", a pantry which provides food to thousands annually, and to tens of thousands in its 25 years of operation. A former coal miner, he was a man of boundless energy, optimism, and love, ready to do anything to help a stranger. He passed in June 2022, just a few weeks before his 69th birthday.
See John 21:15-17. One of the greatest compliments I've received was at this memorial, when mourners asked if I was his brother.

"Alex Haley"
2022, 18" x 24", Acrylic on canvas

I was fortunate to spend an afternoon with Alex Haley (1921-1992), his son, and grandson back in 1978. As we spoke of many topics, we got to genealogy, and my own strange mixed ancestry. He challenged me to continue digging and documenting, saying that my ancestors deserved no less. Almost half a century later, I'm a royal genealogist, with proven descent from royal houses in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia. I was planning to use a kinte-pattern background, but instead found this more appropriate textile print from his ancestral Gambia. For me, his interlaced fingers represent the way in which our various diverse lineages intertwine over the ages. While Haley is best remembered as the descendant of an African who survived the Middle Passage, he also descends from the family of William "Braveheart" Wallace.

"Hugh Thibou", 16" x 22", Acrylic on canvas.

Hugh Thibou (1937-2016) was a universally respected co-worker in Paterson, NJ. He told me once that he believed in Fanafi. Knowing he was from Trinidad where there's a large Muslim population, I thought he meant the Hanafi denomination... which confused me since he was an outspoken Christian. "No," he said, "it means Find A Need And Fill It," a goal he sought to accomplish each day. A high tech trouble shooter, photographer, author, history buff, poet, and ambassador of Trinidadian culture and cuisine, he lived his faith by ministering in four nursing homes every month as well as in a drug rehabilitation center, and caring for countless individuals one on one, feeding and offering shelter to the homeless. He was a surrogate dad to many who had grown up without a father in the house. When he saw my original photo, he nodded approvingly and said "You've captured me." But humbly, I think no one image could ever capture a spirit so expansive. I'm honored to have known him.
